Food insecurity is a thing of the past.
Fresh produce is now free of charge, and grown in every community. Support is available at every step – from planting to cooking – powered by volunteers who have redefined what it means to grow together.
Because a healthier future starts with collective care.
It starts with Nourish.
Nourish is a service design project I created to address the critical issue of local food insecurity. The service connects fresh produce from Nourish Gardens (allotments) to individuals and families facing financial hardship, while simultaneously providing meaningful volunteering opportunities and educational resources. Nourish was designed not just as a food access point, but as a holistic system that brings people together, reduces waste, improves inclusivity and empowers local communities.
As a designer, I set out to create a solution that cultivates both community and sustainability. My goal was to design a service that reduces food waste, improves access to fresh and nutritious food, and creates tangible social value for both recipients and volunteers. Nourish is rooted in the belief that good design can strengthen local ecosystems, empower people, and make social impact scalable.

In many communities, there’s a painful disconnect: while individuals struggle to afford fresh produce, local gardens and allotments often have surplus crops that go unused or wasted. Food banks typically lack the infrastructure to handle fresh donations, and those in need often face barriers in accessing consistent, healthy food. My design research revealed not just a supply-and-demand gap, but an opportunity to create community-driven solutions that build resilience and shared value.
Nourish is the service I designed to bridge these gaps. It creates a seamless system where volunteers offer their time in the allotments in exchange for access to free, fresh produce. Furthermore, surplus produce is gathered, sorted, and distributed through food banks, a community Produce Shop and delivered directly to eligible individuals who struggle to volunteer due to time and mobility restrictions. It builds a network of volunteers — both eligible and non-eligible — who contribute time and skills, and who can track their impact and monetary savings through an integrated app. Nourish is more than a food distribution model: it’s a designed ecosystem where sustainability, well-being, and local empowerment intersect.

Making nutritious food affordably available through community sourcing, food bank partnerships, and seasonal planning.

Empowering users to build lifelong skills – from gardening, to confident, nutritious cooking. Supporting personal growth through hands-on learning and self-sufficiency.

Empowering users to contribute, share skills, and grow food together – improving well-being, strengthening social ties and establishing local resilience.

Reducing food waste, supporting local growers, and promoting low-carbon, circular systems that benefit people and planet.
