Rooted
Learn, Grow, Thrive
Project Overview
Rooted is a community-focused urban farming hub set in a repurposed cinema in Loughborough. Designed to support young people moving away from home, it combines a hydroponic farm with a “take what you need” shop, communal kitchens, and cooking classes. Rooted promotes sustainable living, food education, and local support, making fresh produce and nutritional guidance accessible to all.
Why Rooted?
Key Areas
By day, a farm shop selling fresh fruit and vegetables grown on the hydroponics located on site. This locality reduces food miles and the amount of C0(2) produced through standard food production.
In the evenings, the space transforms into a space fit for a cooking class. Shelves are lowered and floating induction hobs are revealed.
Nutrition Service – Users can book into an appointment to go over their current habits and goals. They put together a meal plan with a nutritionist to help them meet these goals.
Communal Cooking Areas – After shopping, users can use this space free of charge to meal prep and cook with the community, using the facilities Rooted provides.
User Journey
Sustainability At Rooted
Rooted brings new purpose to disused cinemas by transforming them into sustainable urban farms and community spaces. Their central location and large interiors make them ideal for growing food, hosting workshops, and supporting local needs.
Rooted uses rainwater collection and hydroponics to grow fresh produce sustainably with minimal waste. This closed-loop system reduces water usage and supports year-round urban farming without soil.
Rooted uses solar panels and natural light to reduce energy consumption and lower its carbon footprint. Solar tubes and large windows maximise daylight, creating a bright, welcoming space powered by renewable energy.
