I'm a Textile student passionate about combining handcrafted techniques and surface pattern to explore Mediterranean culture in my final project, aiming to create work that is rooted in texture that reflects both cultural identity and the landscapes that shapes us.

Worn Narratives

This sample is inspired by the sun-worn colours of the Mediterranean showcasing various tones of lemon, terracotta and olive which aligns directly from the culinary practices I grew up around in my Italian heritage.

The undulating loops echo the natural imperfections of handmade traditions allowing light and space to move through the structure emphasising it’s fluidity in form.

Inspired by the detailed use of gold leaf in Italian embroidery, I introduced it into my stitch to add a subtle richness which enhanced the surface quality.

The gold leaf worked as a contrast to the soft yarn which highlighted the handcrafted yet elegant nature of this piece.

Sculpting the Mediterranean

Through choosing to embark on a journey of ceramic glazing, I was drawn to the contrast between the rich depth of the Mediterranean Sea and the weathered textures that formulated our land. I intentionally allowed surfaces to build up with layered finishes that suggest erosion and timeworn beauty I often saw within Southern Italy. I disregarded my usual aim for perfection and embraced the spontaneity of the colourations to reflect how natural elements including the sea and sun shape us as individuals in unique ways.

Stockinette and Lace Stitch

I wanted my samples to feel grounded, which is why I worked with a variety of harmonious yarns that naturally held a weathered quality. By alternating between textile techniques, I was able to construct a surface that feels organic. The contrast in weight and tension gave my creative works a raw rhythm that resembled natural surfaces.
