My Final Major Project follows my interest in the pageantry and self-expression related to the LGBTQ+ community. The pieces that I have created depict the main aspects of the transformation process or ‘metamorphosis’. When creating my first set (The Dressing Room) I wanted to pay homage to makeup and the uniqueness and authenticity that can be portrayed trough thus medium; construction a busy set, including a desk vanity, mirror, makeup and a stool on which he individual would sit. The material samples I created following this inspiration came to be integral aspects in the materiality of my pieces. My second set (The Closet) draws inspiration from the flamboyantly clad members of the community, who use the medium of fashion as a way in which they express themselves. I created miniature clothing – as well as a rack on which they sit – for this closest set, ensuring each piece had a lived-in and wearable appearance – full of the personality of wearer. In my final set, I constructed a bedroom, complete with soft furnishings to portray the more subdued elements of the reality of being a queer individual. Following the research I conducted on the Queer culture and history, I understood the intersectionality of mental health disorders and the LGBTQ+ community. Thus, the inspiration for the comparably mundane bedroom set was found. While the previous sets focussed on donning costume to embrace one’s identity, my final set pays homage to the reality of queerness, which may not manifest in playful and joyful ways – as celebrated previously. In my outcome I have intended to create a sense of motion and transition as the viewer experiences the different states of pride and acceptance that comes with the process.
