About the work

Boxall’s practice is a discussion on the monotony of modern life. The work expresses the conflicting feeling of a constant pressure to produce and the desire to create. Boxall’s process is a form of poetry, through the relationship between objects, prints and drawings a wordless dialogue is created, this language then articulates that which they cannot put into words. The involvement of poetry in their work means Boxall has been able to decipher the language of their art and translate their feelings through different mediums. The subject matter of the work is heavily driven by modern politics, mainly the rise of fascism through a heavy reliance on a capitalist structure and the push for overconsumption from both media and government. This has influenced the use of found objects and readymades, reusing in retaliation of the current consumerist tendencies that are constantly being pushed. Boxall’s personal history of being raised in Croydon in an Irish Catholic household has caused religion and the idea of a single purpose, reason or creator to be an underlining tone of the work. While the subject matter of the drawings differs, there are running themes of decay, home, nature, industry, religion and consumption.
