I am a contemporary British artist whose work invites viewers to engage deeply with nature, drawing attention to not only landscapes but also to the often-overlooked small details that collectively shape our experience of the natural world.

‘The Quiet Between’

An Exhibition of Works on Card

‘The Quiet Between’ is a series of 300 works on card that explores the subtle details of nature. Created using ink wash and charcoal, each piece ranges in scale from 1cm to A5, inviting the audience to get close and see the small details that are easily overlooked. These small works allow space for noticing what usually goes unseen.

The series is grounded in a process of close observation and spontaneous mark-making. Using ink and charcoal, I explore the balance of drawing and painting, capturing the small details which surround us. Some pieces evoke more of a visual place whilst others are abstract, with fleeting lines yet full of simple details.

The intention of this project is to encourage viewers to connect more deeply with nature, it focuses on not just large landscapes, but often the small details that shape our experience of the world. Through repetition, scale and simplicity, ‘The Quiet Between’ invites a way of seeing, allowing meaning to unfold over the series.

Leading up to the degree show

In creating ‘The Quiet Between’, the process began with exploration of materials and techniques. Gathering images over the past years of landscapes and taking new ones. I started prepping each piece of card with ink wash allowing me to create a varied background full of texture and depth. By mixing both ink and water together, I was able to create layers of subtle tonal variations. Once the ink wash had dried, I applied detailed ink drawing on top, working to create forms and marks to evokes the landscapes. Each mark was made with careful attention to the relationship between light, space and form.

In addition to ink, charcoal also played a significant role in adding depth and contrast. I experimented with charcoal techniques to bring detail and texture to the work, using soft, smudged charcoal for shading and harder, more defined charcoal lines for sharper details. This range of approaches allowed me to create different atmospheres with each piece.

The works were created on various types of card, including both smooth and textured surfaces, as well as handmade paper. The choice of card influenced the way that ink and charcoal interacted with the surface which created a unique texture and presence in each piece.

Past Works

Alongside ‘The Quiet Between’, I’ve chosen to include a selection of earlier works that reflect a different style of my practice. These pieces, painted in acrylic and gouache, are rich in abstract colour and layered brushwork. While they differ in tone, scale and material from the works exhibited at the show, they remain connected through a shared focus on landscape and detail.

Above are just some pieces I have created, more works with detailed captions are available on my instagram page, details are available above.

My work explores landscapes through detailed mark making and use of different materials. Each piece reflects a close engagement with nature – focusing on both expansive forms and subtle details often overlooked.

I am available for commissions, and all works displayed in this exhibition are available for purchase. Please feel free to get in touch using the contact details displayed.
