I construct large scale ceramic sculptures inspired by nature's curiosities. These hybrid forms remind us of the natural world's significance and resilience to human damage and yet, like ceramics, its fragility and reliance on our care.

My Practice

I spend time outdoors, particularly in woodlands, studying the organisms that I find. These ideas are converged and melded into sculptural forms which could never occur naturally but are nonetheless grounded in nature. They hint at the future and environmental resilience. I hope that, given time, hybrid organisms such as my sculptures will become a reality, thriving despite human threats. In exhibiting my work, I return the forms to their natural woodland environment where they blend in and yet resolutely defy conventions of nature, thereby surprising the viewer on discovery.

For the Fine Art Degree Show 2025, I am exhibiting my work on plinths as there was no undisturbed woodland setting available. The angular, man-made plinths contrast the natural forms and elevate the sculptures, endorsing their high status.

Workshop Development

My sculptures are constructed by the coil building technique using crank clay. This rough clay makes them durable and suitable for outdoor display as well allowing large scale construction without collapse. They are glazed with a combination of stains mixed with transparent earthenware glaze (shiny sections) and red iron oxide (matt sections).

I coil build the sculptures in rings, carefully fitting them together and embellishing with decorations once leather hard to disguise the joins, achieving a more organic appearance.

Thank you for visiting the degree show!
