It is the intention of my work to challenge the limitations of the materiality of paper pulp. Material manipulation forms the basis of most art practices, my practice uses the concept of materiality itself to challenge the limitations of paper. This in itself has become the conceptual basis of my practice. My exploration has allowed me to consider how the process of making artwork can become the artwork.
Exploring the notion of impermanence, Dyeing Pt. 2 uses natural substances to create fabric sculptures. The artwork changes colour when sprayed with substances of different pH due to the dyes halochromic chemical properties. This allows the artwork to remain in a state of flux every spray acting as a destructor of what the artwork once was.
This examination of the materiality of paper pulp is combined with investigations into the chemical properties of natural dyes including red cabbage, turmeric and black beans. Each of these substances are natural pH indicators. When the H+ ion dissociates from the natural indicators it causes a colour change to occur. Through investigation into these chemical properties, I am able to apply these techniques to my own practice. Allowing me the opportunity to invite the audience to participate, in turn making them investigators. Involving them, both allows me to relinquish control over the art and also encourages the audience to engage with the process of creating, making them feel as though they are parts of the work. Through interactivity I can create artwork that physically changes through audience participation over the course of exhibition further highlighting the transient nature of my practice.
Post my degree in Fine Art at Loughborough University, I will be continuing my education completing a Masters in Art, Philosophy and Cultural Institutions at Liverpool University. I have future ambitions of completing art research exploring the influence of institutions on the production of art. I will also be continuing my art practice and look forward to developing my handmade paper sculptures further in the future.
