Motus is a connected rehabilitation system designed to support people recovering from joint injuries. It combines a discreet wearable with an intuitive app to deliver real-time movement tracking, progress monitoring, and feedback. Built for both patients and physiotherapists, Motus creates a shared platform for recovery – one that fits naturally into everyday life.
It’s not just a device. It’s a system that turns subjective rehab into something measurable, motivating, and manageable.

The rehabilitation process is often uncertain. Patients leave physio appointments unsure if they’re progressing, doing exercises correctly, or risking further injury.
Adherence to programs drops, and outcomes suffer.
At the same time, physiotherapists rely on intermittent snapshots of progress, subjective reporting, and tools that haven’t changed in decades.
Musculoskeletal conditions are one of the leading global causes of disability, costing billions annually in treatment and lost productivity. Yet many recovery tools are focused on short-term relief – not long-term insight.
Motus was designed to change that: to bring clarity, accountability, and confidence to recovery through continuous, real-world joint tracking.

The hardware was designed for discreet, all-day use. Adaptable across multiple joints, it uses skin-safe materials and a refined form factor to sit comfortably beneath clothing without straps or bulk. Prototypes were built to explore fit, attachment methods, and wearability in active settings.
The companion app transforms motion data into visual feedback—helping users see progress, follow rehab routines, and feel in control. It was designed around the user experience, with a focus on simplicity, motivation, and supporting physios in tracking long-term recovery.
Throughout the project, insights from athletes, active individuals, and physiotherapists shaped the design. Wearability, comfort, and understanding of progress were key themes. Prototypes – both digital and physical – were used to refine comfort, app flow, and how the system communicates with users.

Motus creates a stronger, smarter connection – between patients and their bodies, and between physios and their patients. It replaces guesswork with guidance and turns recovery into something users can see, feel, and trust.
By bridging the gaps between appointments, Motus helps people recover more confidently and clinicians work more effectively.

Motus is now being developed for commercial launch through Loughborough University’s LUinc. Graduate Start-Up Accelerator. With support from the incubator, the system is progressing toward a real-world product that can help reshape how rehabilitation is delivered.

This project builds on experience gained during my design engineering placement at PDD – a London-based consultancy specialising in healthcare and consumer innovation. At PDD, I worked on early-stage concept generation, prototyping, and device testing, with a strong emphasis on design for manufacture and medical device development. This experience helped shape Motus into a viable product-service system, grounded in commercial awareness and user insight.
