Beyond the Light

Beyond the Light is inspired by the phenomenon of light and shadow and the powerful impact of natural light on human experience of space, well-being and our relationship with the environment. Informed by historical, scientific, and artist research, the project examines how light not only shapes space and perception but also influences emotional and physical health.

The project captures the ephemeral beauty of shifting light and shadow to evoke a sense of calm, wonder, and reconnection with nature. Light and shadow are treated as inseparable elements, whose interplay brings depth, rhythm, and emotion to space. Design development explores how textiles can harness, filter, and manipulate light to create immersive sensory environments that reflect nature’s transient qualities.

Project Highlights

Light & Shadow
Light and shadow manipulation drives the project, inspired by figurative and abstract shadow photography exploring the interplay of light. Subtle contrasts and ephemeral shadows inform mark making, layering, and texture.
Woven Textiles
Weave experimentation explores spaced linen warps to create open areas and shadow effects through intricate handcrafted techniques. Digitally designed jacquard weaves feature weft floats that let sunlight pass through, blending natural texture with shadow and light.
Natural Materials & Circular Economy
Driven by a commitment to sustainability, using biodegradable fibres, natural dyes, and low-impact methods. Linen, cotton, and wool make the designs compostable, reducing landfill waste and emissions, and natural print pastes are developed from myrobalan and iron.
