Fay Sheppard – Ecoprinter and Natural Dyes Artist

Fay works with natural dyes from foraged foliage in a process called Ecoprinting- where plants are boiled with material (paper or fabric,) leaving their dye transfer behind. The process is also known as botanical contact printing.

Whilst her love for landscape and natural forms always influenced her creative journey, Fay has devoted herself throughout the degree to learning about natural dyes and refining her Ecoprinting practice.
She forages and prints throughout the year, enjoying the subtle variations that each season- and therefore plant- can provide. Even working with the same species of plant, not one print is the same depending on the environmental idiosyncrasies at the time. Spring prints can be faint and subdued due to lack of tannins and youth of the plants, whilst summer and autumn prints are rich and textural.

Some of Fay’s prints are available to purchase in the degree show shop.
