Arête – Alpine Injury Response Aid

For mountaineers and skiers responding to injury in remote environments, the Arête Response Aid is a next-generation SOS device that guides users step-by-step through best-practice care while seamlessly relaying critical casualty data to emergency teams.

Unlike traditional beacons, Arête bridges the gap between first response and professional rescue—empowering the user and accelerating effective intervention.

Bridging the Gap Between Injury and Rescue

Every year around 30,000 people find themselves facing an injury in the mountains – serious enough to require mountain rescue. In this moment they need three things:

1. Instructions on what to do – most people panic and lose their ability to think clearly, we need to guide them through the rescue process
2. A way to understand what’s wrong with the casualty – we’re talking about mountaineers and skiers here, not doctors, walking them through a casualty evaluation and providing a means of monitoring is essential
3. A method of communication – we need to communicate not only that there is a problem, but also the context of the problem: the injury, the location, and the condition of the casualty

A Medically Validated Approach

I worked closely with industry leaders in paramedicine, mountain rescue and emergency dispatch operations to define a market leading system for guiding the user to provide the best response possible – written in plain English and distilled to it’s essence.

The sensor is stuck to the casualty, tracking vital signs – enabling data-driven advice and sending updates to mountain rescue via satellite

A Platform – Not Just a Product

The interactions and UI of the device was test with users and received an exceptionally good usability score, proving that in the moments that matter most it’s a product that will enable action.

Associate Consultant, frog – Capgemini Invent, London

During my placement year at frog my understanding of design made a fundamental shift. Learning from extremely knowledgeable practitioners and thought leaders, I was given a new lens with which to look the world around us. I have taken this new perspective and applied it to the way I work, taking a strategic approach to projects, considering users from a human perspective and holistically incorporating all design disciplines to shape meaningful products and experiences.
